His Holiness Dalai Lama visiting Toronto 2010

I feel immensely fortunate to have been invited to photograph His Holiness the Dalai Lama during his 3 day visit to Toronto in October, 2010.The experience was most humbling and inspiring. Not only because he has been a role model of mine for so many years; but I witnessed first hand, in the interactions between him and his audience, the utmost humility and respect to all he speaks to. He is truly a living example of what we are capable of becoming: wise, compassionate, loving, and respectful to all beings.

The Tibetan community living in Toronto is one of the largest in North America. Their devotion to Buddhism and the teachings of the Dalai Lama was displayed not only through the elaborate decorations, but through their genuine facial expression and body language.  I have immense respect for the Tibetan people, they are definitely one of the most committed, compassionate and hard working people I have ever met and worked with. Their community spirit is strong and undivided, their life is filled with hope and aspiration. It was indeed an experience of a life time to be a part of this celebration, to have the opportunity to be in the presence of His Holiness and to photograph him. More impressively, was the strong sense of solidarity and unshakable optimism I witnessed among the Tibetan people. I hope the images will inspire you to live a life filled with love and compassion and to create a better place for all to live harmoniously among each other.

Like many of you, I was so curious to know what was served to his holiness when he was here, well,…the answer is delicious vegetarian goodness made with love. Here are a few images of a lunch set for the Dalai Lama.

A stirring collection. Thanks for your vision in capturing these moments. The compassion and humanity that was obviously present in the hearts and minds of the people transfers through the photos, as though you have created a portal for it to enter into my now, so whoever sees these will share that love. Beautiful work, Johnny Lam. (and the food…mmmm!)
